HeartCode BLS is the American Heart Association's blended learning option for Basic Life Support certification. It combines a self-paced online cognitive portion with a hands-on skills session led by an AHA-certified instructor. The result is the same nationally recognized BLS certification — delivered on your schedule, with less time spent in a classroom.
This format is ideal for healthcare professionals, nursing students, medical residents, and anyone who needs BLS certification but can't commit to a full 3.5-hour classroom session. Complete the online learning at home, at your own pace, then schedule a focused skills session at our Denver or Boulder location to demonstrate competency and earn your 2-year AHA eCard.

How HeartCode BLS Works
Step 1
Complete HeartCode BLS Online
Purchase the HeartCode BLS eLearning course from the AHA or through our shop. Work through the interactive modules covering adult, child, and infant BLS, high-performance team dynamics, and AED use. The online portion takes approximately 2-3 hours and includes an integrated exam. You'll receive a certificate of completion to bring to your skills session.
Step 2
Schedule Your Skills Session
Book a hands-on skills testing session at CPR-Professionals in Denver or Boulder. Sessions run approximately 45-60 minutes. You'll demonstrate high-quality chest compressions, rescue breathing, bag-mask ventilation, AED operation, and choking relief on mannequins with real-time feedback from your instructor.
Who Is HeartCode BLS For?
HeartCode BLS is designed for healthcare professionals and students who need BLS certification but prefer the flexibility of online learning. It's the same certification as the traditional classroom course — the only difference is how you learn the cognitive material.

Whether you complete the traditional classroom BLS course or HeartCode BLS blended learning, you earn the exact same certification — an AHA BLS Provider eCard valid for 2 years. There is no distinction on the certification between the two formats. Employers, hospitals, nursing programs, and licensing boards all accept HeartCode BLS equally.
Your eCard is issued electronically on the same day you complete your skills session. You can access and share it immediately for employment verification, school admissions, or clinical placement requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to complete the online portion before my skills session?
Yes. You must finish the HeartCode BLS online course and bring your certificate of completion to the skills session. We cannot conduct the skills test without it.
How long is the online course?
The HeartCode BLS online portion takes approximately 2-3 hours. You can start, stop, and resume at any time — work through it at your own pace.
What if I don't pass the skills session?
Our instructors provide coaching and feedback during your session. If you don't demonstrate competency on the first attempt, you'll have the opportunity to practice and retest during the same session at no additional charge.
Can I use HeartCode BLS for recertification?
Yes. HeartCode BLS is accepted for both initial certification and recertification (renewal). The skills session may be shorter for recertifying students.
